Unfortunately not as present. Export to excel and subsequent manipulation would likely be the best fit at the moment.

What would you do with this?  I've been thinking about this lately as well.

Hey jbiggley - This sounds like a cool feature to be considered.  We are going through some growing pains with the thwack store currently, so we're making a few changes to the workflow of the ordering process.  Let me discuss with the team to see if something like this would be feasible.

Thanks!

I think this is a great idea; for example, one use-case may represent my ability to say thank you to someone who spent a significant amount of time helping me through a problem, and aside from a sincere thank you, this is another method to show my appreciation of their time--often personal time.

in my previous role we were migration several hundred frame circuits to an MPLS network.  Once the circuit was provisioned from the provider we would peform our own stress test and turn up before moving in any users.  This would include testing of through-put, load, stability, etc.  Several times we would determine that our provider did not provision the circuit correctly.  Also, during the same time, we would upgrade our existing circuits and we would never know when the provider completed the upgrade behind the scenes on our metro E deployments.  From time to time we would also use it for troubleshooting.

Our security constantly would say speedtest.net was an invalid test, but no one could come up with a tool that had a "valid" test.  We would have paid for one, and I am sure other would have and will also.

Do you currently use both NPM and SAM? If your answer is “yes!” then please keep reading. If not, we’ll catch you next time!

We are conducting a 10-minute survey to test out some possible navigation changes in Orion.  We need feedback from users like you to ensure that these changes will make your life easier.  Not only that, you’ll receive 250 thwack points for helping us out!

We’re using an online tool called Treejack to gather feedback on different ways that the navigation could be organized.  Here’s how it works:

  • You’ll see an overview of the navigation – not Orion, just 2 to 3 levels  of the navigation.
  • You’ll be given a set of tasks.
  • For each task, you’ll choose where you think you would go to accomplish that task by clicking through the navigation tree.
  • Seeing how you navigate will tell us if we need to reorganize or re-label the options to make things easier to find.
  • At the end of the survey, you’ll have the chance to provide comments.

If you currently use both NPM and SAM, please complete this 10-minute survey for 250 thwack points.

Note: This survey will end on Monday, October 27th. Points will be awarded once the survey has closed.

Thanks Danielle.  If the gift item idea isn't feasible now, maybe we can at least get Solarwinds-esque thank-you cards.  Say thank-you and spread the Solarwinds joy, what could be better!?!

Re: Pre and Post Tasks?

So, is it possible to perform pre patch installation tasks before patches are applied?

It depends. The pre- and post-installation tasks declared via PackageBoot are per-UPDATE tasks. If you have a task that needs to be performed for a specific update, this is the tool for that job. However, the order of updates installed in a batch is indeterminate, therefore you cannot be guaranteed that the pre-installation task will run before ANY updates are installed, unless that update is the FIRST update installed. The only way it can be guaranteed to be the FIRST update is if its the ONLY update.

However, the way I read your scenario is that you need to shutdown a particular service EVERYTIME you're going to do a reboot, so a patch package is not the place to do this anyway.

One way you can address this issue with Patch Manager is this:

  1. Explicitly suppress the reboot when you do the patch deployment.
  2. After the patch deployment is completed, then STOP the service that needs to be stopped.
  3. Reboot the server using the Shutdown/Reboot task.

The downside of this process is that it requires three different tasks to be initiated, in sequence, after confirming the previous task has completed.

However, the tasks can be pre-defined and stored in the "Scheduled Tasks" collection (as DISABLED tasks), and then simply executed on-demand as needed.

some interesting ideas, but I would take a learning from Symantec, and their backup-exec software, and if possible have a way to change back to the old interface /menu, because the new Symantec interface sucks.

Application Status Alerts

Hi all,

Just wondering if it possible to change the alerts that SAM provides when an application alert is active?

When nodes and groups alerts are active, the alerts provide all the necessary information to know what is actually affected.

However as soon as the application alerts are activated for being down or critical, there is little to no information of the affected node.

This is even made worse when the alert is transferred to Alert Central.

Here are some snapshots to show what the issues are:

SAM Summary:

SAM Alerts:

Alert Central Email:

Thanks for any assistance.

ThwackPack Backpack - Repurchase?

I really have enjoyed my Solarwinds Backpack from Thwack (ThwackPack).  I have hauled it back and forth to work almost every day.  I even use it for trips out of town.

Unfortunately it is starting to show its use and age.  All of the pockets and zippers are still working great but the seams and edges are fraying a bit.

I would like to propose that we could re-buy the ThwackPack after a two year wait, two years on Thwack, after you reach 50,000 points or something like that?

The patching will continue until security improves!

Thanks.

Do you rule accept wildcards for the registry path checks? I'll need to check the registry key for firefox which ends in something like version x86 de.

Yeah, I saw that.  I was just curious if any options existed now.  I am not familiar with the DPA product but I am working working with a customer that asked about Orion integration and I wasn't sure if anything currently existed for that.

I would suggest using exactly the same rule types as we use in the English packages, except adjusting them for the changes that occur on a German system.

Rules do not accept wildcards, you would have to enumerate each actual possibility and then wrap it in a "When ANY of these..."  option.

Re: NPM: Mass Outage Alerting- Over 50 nodes down, Send Alert

$

My reply to this thread is very late, however I ran across a similar scenario and I needed a solution. Hopefully if someone else runs across a similar problem this can help them. I'm sure there is a much better way to this. In my scenario I needed to be alerted only if 2 smtp application monitors were down simultaneously on different nodes. Furthermore, there shouldn't be an alert sent if only a single application monitor was down and only a single alert should be sent. My solution, however, can also be applied to mass outages.

Terms:

Group - A collection of objects you are trying to poll for a similar status. This is not related to the groups in solarwinds.

Polled Node - This is a node that is either part of the group, or an independent node that just has to exist.

Here is an example based off my application monitor scenario:

SELECT APM_ApplicationAlertsData.ApplicationID AS NetObjectID, APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Name AS Name

FROM APM_ApplicationAlertsData

WHERE(

(APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Availability = 'Down') AND

(APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Name = 'SMTPTest') AND

(APM_ApplicationAlertsData.ApplicationID= '323')

)

GROUP BY APM_ApplicationAlertsData.ApplicationID, APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Name

HAVING( SELECT COUNT(*) FROM APM_ApplicationAlertsData

WHERE APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Availability = 'Down' AND

APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Name = 'SMTPTest'

) = 2

I have not modified the SELECT statement from what the Advanced Alert Manager generates. Here my "Polled Node" has the ApplicationID 323. This node is part of the "Group". I could have just as easily created a node that wasn't part of the group. If the "Polled Node" isn't part of the group we want our WHERE section to always cause the query (omitting the Having section) to return our "Polled Node".

The HAVING statement is where the magic happens. Our sql query wont return our "Polled Node" (even if it is down) unless we have at least 2 application monitors named SMTPTest in the down state.

The reset action can't be left default.

SELECT APM_ApplicationAlertsData.ApplicationID AS NetObjectID, APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Name AS Name

FROM APM_ApplicationAlertsData

WHERE(

(APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Name = 'SMTPTest') AND

(APM_ApplicationAlertsData.ApplicationID= '323')

)

GROUP BY APM_ApplicationAlertsData.ApplicationID, APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Name

HAVING( SELECT COUNT(*) FROM APM_ApplicationAlertsData

WHERE APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Availability = 'Down' AND

APM_ApplicationAlertsData.Name = 'SMTPTest'

) != 2

Here the WHERE statement will always return true as long as that application monitor exists, however our reset sql query wont return our "Polled Node" until we no longer have 2 SMTPTest application monitors down.

The concept is similar to what the original poster had, however OP is using the TOP command to select the first node for his alerts. Well what if that node goes up, but there are still 50 nodes down? Another alert will be generated about 50 nodes being down on the new first node. Instead of selecting the first node, just create a brand new node and name it "Mass Outage". Poll this node in the "Where" section.

Where the NodeID of the "Mass Outage Node" is 311 (made up number)

SELECT Nodes.NodeID AS NetObjectID, Nodes.Caption AS Name

FROM Nodes

WHERE Nodes.NodeID = '311'

GROUP BY NodeID, Caption

HAVING (SELECT COUNT(*)

FROM Nodes

WHERE StatusDescription LIKE 'Node Status is Down.')>=50

Reset:

SELECT Nodes.NodeID AS NetObjectID, Nodes.Caption AS Name

FROM Nodes

WHERE Nodes.NodeID = '311'

GROUP BY NodeID, Caption

HAVING (SELECT COUNT(*)

FROM Nodes

WHERE StatusDescription LIKE 'Node Status is Down.')<50

Please let me know if I'm retarded and this isn't working how I think it is. I rarely touch SQL.

Hi Eric

From our support team:

We trap  literals used for the parameters the first time we poll for SQL text that was used for the latest compilation as of that poll for that SP and SQL statement.   Those literals can be viewed in Management Studio by exporting the plan from DPA to an xml doc and opening in SSMS.

We don't do any specific parameter sniffing at this time.
